Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind?-Auld Lang Syne

Thoughts while listening to a banjo version of Auld Lang Syne (which by the way surprisingly rocks)

Lots of instruments can convey emotion.

A violin can emote like nobodies business.

A guitar can emote.

Ooooh a saxophone, now that can emote.

But for me no instrument really sells it like the bagpipes. I mean sure they aren't real versatile. You don't hear a lot of bagpipes in rock music, or Hip Hop, or Reggae, or Country (insert laughter at self here) but in their place bagpipes are totally awesome.

Will you dance to this beat, and hold a lover close?-Lying Is The Most Fun A Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off by Panic! At The Disco

Fiona: (Singing) Dance to this pee, dance to this pee, dance to this peeeeeee!

Me:Honey the line is dance to this beat.

Ya gotta love a Mondegreen.

My lonely days are over. And life is like a song.-At Last Etta James

My friend is getting married in September. I am one of her bridesmaids. Proof that I am both a good friend and good bridesmaid.

Me: Have you decided on the song for your first dance?

Bride: Yes, At Last.

Me: Excellent choice, a classic. Etta James or Celine Dion?

Bride: Oh definitely Etta James.

Me: (With sigh of relief) Oh good. I really didn't want to have to slap you.

Friends don't let friends use overly dramatic covers of classics for their first dance.

Be smart, but never show it.-Louis B. Mayer

Have you ever had a job with specialized knowledge? Sure you have....every company has their own little systems and procedures that you will never be able to use in any other part of your life.

Well have you ever had an unexpected opportunity to use some knowledge from an old job that you thought was never ever going to be of use again?

That JUST happened to me and it feels AWESOME. I feel like James Bond, Sherlock Holmes, or Einstein because I am so cool/intuitive/smart. I knew not only that something was wrong but what.

Here's what happened. I ordered a used CD from Amazon. I think it cost $1.98. It just arrived. I could tell as I opened the package that the jewel case was thinner than normal but was not yet alarmed. As I slid it out of the package it was obvious it was an after market case. Still no biggie maybe the original case got all banged up. But then the case slid and I could see the back plate (ya know the back part that usually has the list of songs and sits under the cradle for the actual CD) was just floating around free not attached to anything. Okay that's a bit ghetto but wait there's more....near the top of what should have been the spine of the case is a cut. Dun Dun DUUUUUUUUUUUN!

Oh the suspense!

You are so excited right now I know, I know.

Man this is riveting stuff.

Here's where my super useful past job knowledge comes in. Cutting through the jewel case and the spine of the back plate is one of the ways record companies mark something as a promotional item. I have lots and lots of promos because I used to work in a music store and I know it's illegal to sell them. Technically promos remain the property of the record company but they never ask for them back.

I totally don't care that it's a promo. Like I said I have others. I'll probably loose the packaging any way. But I did send an email to Amazon letting them know what happened since they may want to know. I might not even have done that if it was an individual selling it but it was an online used CD store and they should know better.

Sure I felt like a bit of a tool for narking them out but the I am so cool because I know about promo CD's was way stronger.

For me, songwriting is something like breathing: I just do it. But that doesn't mean you're fantastic.-Adam Duritz

I wish I'd been able to record this but Fiona made up her own song in the bathtub while playing with her Little Mermaid toy. As far as I recall it went like this.

My hair is beautiful

And I have purple

And I'm the mermaid

But the best part is

I don't have to do anything

And I'm the mermaid

But the best part is

I don't have to dance

I don't have to fly

I don't have to....

And so

And don't cry Mama (here she paused while I assured her I wasn't going to cry)

And I'm the mermaid

But the best part is

I don't have to do any thing

And now I'm ni night (and she laid the wash cloth tenderly over the mermaid)

I like Nine Inch Nails, and I like hip-hop.-Axl Rose

Fiona: STOP!

Dave and I answered at the same time

Dave: Hammertime!

Me: Collaborate and listen.

We're not so much up on the current hip hop trends in our house mostly due to an intense disliking of the genre. Also we have no reverence for our child's displeasure.

You can't depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.-Mark Twain

This will be the cover of my album if anyone is ever nutty enough to offer me a recording contract. Also it's my new profile pic because it seemed like I should change it after 2 1/2 years.

There's nothing sadder in this world than to awake Christmas morning and not be a child.-Erma Bombeck

A few things

#1 the post from yesterday was supposed to publish this morning. Either I or Blogger screwed up. Ooops. Oh well bonus for you.

#2 I got a comment asking if it was okay to quote me if they put a back link. Unfortunately there was no way for me to contact the questioner but yes that's fine. I'm obviously a fan of quotes so as long as you give me credit I'd be honored.

#3 I know two anti-Christmas songs so if you are the bah humbug type feel free to come on over to my house and request them. I'll serve you gingerbread and eggnog by the fire (where we store a warm kitty for cuddling).

I have very eclectic taste in music, but when it comes to going to concerts, I like going to rock concerts.-Fran Drescher

The last time I went to a concert was the weekend after I met Dave, which will be 13 years at the end of this month. Part of that IS because Dave and I don't always have similar taste in music but mostly it's because the day I met Dave was also the last day I worked in the music store and I don't hear about when tickets are going on sale any more. Since my taste in music rarely includes artists who are still putting out new music (or if they are it's the "yeah you should have stopped a few albums ago" kind) they also don't tour much any way.

On the other hand one band that is the exception to my "I don't listen to current music" stance will be touring in 2011. I just kinda stumbled across this info and realised how much I'd like to go..... Yeah then I realised I have no one to go with. I could probably talk Dave in to going but I know perfectly well he'd hate it and then I'd have an awful time knowing he was hating it and that wouldn't be fun for anyone. So I went through all my friends in my head, which took about a minute because I don't really have friends any more who aren't family. I came to the very sad conclusion that the only person who might be willing to go with me even though he isn't familiar with their music is my Dad.

Am I wrong or is that just about the lamest thing you've ever heard? I need to make some friends.

Like a Ninja of love repelling down from above-Love Handle, You Snuck Your Way in to My Heart

There are two kinds of earworm (song that gets stuck in your head).

The kind that is really annoying and makes you want to jab a chop stick in your ear to kill it, generally from children's programing or commercials.

Side note: I remember one time my brother wandered in to the kitchen singing a tampon jingle and my Mom and I had to try to explain to him that he should stop without giving him way more info than he needed at seven.

The other kind of earworm is just as invasive but less painful. It's the kind that is just so darn catchy you have to go buy the song and listen to it 500 times in a row until it looses it's grip on your brain (Friday's post in my case).

Here's a list of some of the earworms that have joined my catalogue for better or worse.

Santeria-Sublime
The Lion Sleeps Tonight-The Tokens
Pretty Fly For a White Guy-Offspring
Livin' La Vida Loca-Ricky Martin
Bring Me to Live-Evanescence
How Bizarre-OMC
Stayin' Alive-The BeeGees
These Boots are Made for Walking-Nancy Sinatra
Smooth-Santana
1985-Bowling for Soup
9 to 5-Dolly Parton
Killing Me Softly-The Fugges
Where'd You Go-Fort Minor
Kick the Bass-Julien K
Love Fool-The Cardigans

What gets stuck in your head?

Friday, September 17, 2010

Where'd you go, I miss you so, Seems like it's been forever that you've been gone-Fort Minor

Alright normaly I'm not a fan of Hip Hop but this song kocked me on my butt I just really liked the message. So I'm sharing.

After all, all he did was string together a lot of old well-known quotations.-H.L. Mencken on Shakespeare

I heard the best quote today but I don't know who said it or I'd give them credit.

"Boy bands in the 90's all looked like they were in a street gang.......if their turf was a hair salon"

I'm a terrible trumpet player.-Ray Stevens

More proof that Dave attracts weirdos.

Dave: There's this parking lot I go to at lunch sometimes and nap. It's a PG&E building but it must be 90% vacant because it's always really quiet there. Except for this one time when a guy was playing a trumpet.

Me: A trumpet?

Dave: Yeah he pulled in to the spot next to me and started playing a trumpet.

I don't know anything about music. In my line you don't have to.-Elvis Presley

Conversation when I worked at the music store (about 15 years ago)

Customer: (Holds up 2 cd's*) Which one should I buy for my daughter?

Me: Ummmmm what does she usually listen to?

Customer: She's about your age.

Me: Yeah. I don't know.

Customer: (Getting frustrated with me) Which one would you buy?

Me: Honestly I think they both suck

And then she complained about me.

*They were Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette and Relish by Joan Osborne

I tried so hard, and got so far, but in the end it doesn't even matter-In the End, Linkin Park

Wacky Dream

So I walked in to my room which in this case was a dorm room (complete with room mate) to find one of my favorite bands practicing to perform for my nephew's first birthday. Dave was helping them do all the technical stuff to set up and the lead singer was jumping up and down on my bed. I decided that this was not a good moment to point out to Dave that I have a giant crush on said singer (in my bed sigh). Dave hands me a fancy schmancy white microphone and asks me to bring it to the stage. I know, like you do in dreams, that they could not perform without this particular mic. So I tried to head to the stage but well that's when it turned in to a frustration dream where I couldn't find the stage and then I found the wrong band (my nephew was having quite the rock n roll first birthday) and then I found the stage, which was on the deck at the house I grew up in in Oakland (why didn't I just look there to begin with?) but the band wasn't there yet and I was starting to feel like a total tool carrying this stupid mic like the Olympic torch and then.....the alarm went off.

If it's illegal to rock and roll, throw my ass in jail!-Kurt Cobain

Saturday:

As we pulled up to the venue to see the Wiggles

Dave: Watch we're going to get in there and they'll say the Wiggles couldn't make it and instead we're getting The Kings of Death Metal.

Me: That would be awesome. I'd love that. Fiona might not....actually yeah she'd probably like it too. I'm not going to tell you what I let her listen to in my car.

So much of life, it seems to me, is determined by pure randomness.-Sidney Poitier

A few things to short to warrant their own posts

The saddest thing I think I've ever seen was an impound tow truck with a little girls bike on it.

A little piece of me just died! And I'm pretty sure this officially makes me old. I just heard an instrumental version of Smells Like Teen Spirit in a commercial for rice.

Ya know what's annoying? When I get a comment and I don't know what post it is in reference to and then I try to publish it but Blogger eats it and I never find out what the heck it means. Dude that pisses me off.

Friend: I Like your jacket. Or is it a hoodie?.... I like your Joodie.

Co workers description of a recent trip to Wales:
"I was surrounded by all these crazy older ladies. It was like being in a Monty Python Skit all the time!"

I don't understand suspenders. Was there a time when no ones pants fit? Were they one size fits all? Was it because it was the depression and no one could afford new pants? If the pants fit they shouldn't fall down.

Cutest thing ever=Fiona singing Ring of Fire.

I was at my desk working away quietly listening to a book. The book in question happens to be set in Florida and the narrator made a passing reference to a Waffle House. I had to stifle an irrational urge to yell out, "Wooo hooo Waffle House!" My poor coworkers don't know how lucky they are I don't say half the strange things I think.

California is a great place to live if you're an orange.-Fred A. Allen

Dear Katey Perry,

I have three things to say to you

#1. If I'm understanding your euphemism correctly I don't think you want to "melt" the Popsicle

#2. There's no U in Girl

#3. Speaking as a female from the golden state you do not represent me.

I like the wig though

Thanks
Dani

I love punk rock, but I also love metal.-Penelope Spheeris

Dear Internet,

I love you. While surfing your familiar waters I discovered Me First and the Gimme Gimme's has another album. Yay.

Thanks
Dani

My all time favorite song

Danny's song of coarse I love it duh! 'Coarse the video is kinda lame.
