Ditch Conspiracy

Why is it when you are worried about where someone is you always say they might be dead in a ditch? There are so very many places they might be dead why all the ditch paranoia? Also what percentage of dead people are found in ditches? I suspect some sort of anti ditch lobby is spreading this propaganda. If I were a ditch I'd be greatly offended by this stereo type.
